It is my pleasure to introduce the draft Literacy Learning Progressions, one of the professional tools provided to support the New Zealand Curriculum. The draft Literacy Learning Progressions sets out the specific literacy knowledge and skills that students need if they are to meet the reading and writing demands of the curriculum.
Literacy in English is critical to enabling students to engage successfully with all aspects of the curriculum. The key competencies and all the learning areas depend on students being able to understand, respond to, and use a variety of forms of language to think, to locate, interpret, and evaluate information, and to communicate. Teachers need to ensure that students develop their literacy expertise so that they are able to engage with the curriculum at increasing levels of complexity and with increasing independence. The draft Literacy Learning Progressions takes account of the texts that students need to be able to read and write and the tasks they encounter as they progress through schooling. The progressions describe the literacy expertise they will need to meet these demands.
My thanks go to all who have contributed to the development of the draft Literacy Learning Progressions: members of the National Literacy Reference Group, academics, teachers, education sector bodies, and the team at Learning Media, which has co-ordinated the work.
We are interested in getting your feedback. There is a feedback form at the back of this document, and we have also set up a website, at www.literacyprogressions.org.nz, which we encourage you to visit.
